My Bedcover Hack
When it comes to bedding, I am a minimalist. I am not a huge fan of throw pillows or extra blankets, but I do like a bed to be inviting and expertly made. I make our bed promptly every morning because I like the neatness of it…and I like unmaking it and crawling into it every evening. I will never give up this ritual as it is some sort of medicine for me and my tightly wired brain.
Over the past several years, the minimalist bed has become a thing and I am here for it. Thank you Axel Vervoordt. With what started as a few companies offering a small selection of “oversized blankets” the market has since evolved into a place that is more exciting to me. Minimalist bedcovers and bedspreads of differing colors, textures, weights and sizes! I feel there are still improvements to be made but I love the direction this newly born bedcover market is taking.
Since the spawn of it all we have tried and tested our fair share of covers, some wonderfully made and others I would not try again. I have also discovered a little hack that has changed my bedcover game…at least until or IF improvements are made in the market. Here are a few of our favorites we have personally tried:
These Parachute bedcovers are no strangers in the bedding world. Although personally I am not a huge fan of their bedding, it has developed a bit of a cult following. Their bedcovers however, are nicely made and have a good weight to them. I appreciate the variety of colors they offer and change out to keep things fresh. Although when the color or pattern is gone, it’s gone. My only critique (which is a recurring one on this list) is their sizes are borderline too small for that elegant oversized draped look I am always wanting. They are however, perfect for tucking in for that tailored look or as a large blanket to cover the lower half of a bed.
Cultiver was one of the first brands I tried and their oversized blankets are lovely, but nothing to use as a bedcover. When Colin King partnered with them I was excited to try and fell in love with the new color ways and the offering of larger bedcovers. These also had a nice weight to them but they were a little spendy for similar products out there…and borderline too small if you don’t have a low lying bed. The new colors are always a delight and on trend but when they are gone they are gone!
By far, my favorite place to source bedcovers is…from Zara. They continuously stock the neutrals which I love and are always making improvements to their lines. I am a forever fan. We have used their linen bedspreads on countless client projects as well as personally. I keep coming back because they are that good. A range of ever changing colors, good weight to them, the price is great…especially when compared to the others in this category. ALSO they have started stocking California king sizing 130” x 130” which is the PERFECT size if you are draping over a king. This is a game changer and I am excited to try one. My general rule of thumb is to find a bedspread that is at least 120” x 120” (a rare feat) and that might be cutting it close because we prefer our beds on the lower side. Most bedspreads are in the 90” X 110” range. Nice, but not for that draped look.
The hack though? I am almost giddy with excitement sharing this because I love it so much. A tablecloth. Yeah, you heard it right. I was on the hunt for that perfect 120”x 120” size and like I mentioned before, finding that size is RARE. So I started experimenting. I had ordered a few napkins from Zara’s Vincent Van Duysen line and LOVED their hand feel. Extremely luxurious and elegant linen, more polished and less of that rustic almost scratchy feel. In my mind I was like, “this is luxurious bedding” so I dove further. The table cloths in that line are almost perfectly sized. I ordered instantly, placed it on the bed and full on gasped. I have ordered a handful since. The price…lovely, the weight and feel…luxury and the colors keep getting better. My only minor criticism is they aren’t color fast. Not a biggie, but something to think about especially if it will be getting hit directly by the sun.
Even with this new found hack, I am still excited to explore the market more. As I mentioned before, the offerings keep getting better and the sizes more palatable for that draped look. Bed Threads is on my list as they have some beautiful colors and guess what…120 x 120! I am also excited to try Zara’s new size of 130 x 130. I am glad the market is coming around, but I am still swooning over my tablecloth!
